On October 27th, 1993, a brush fire that started above Kinneloa Mesa in Pasadena and L.A. County, began to burn toward Sierra Madre. The fire burned into town behind the Retreat House and the Department was ready. The Retreat House was saved by 100 fire personnel working under Operations, Arcadia Battalion Chief and former Department member, Rich Brown. Cheif Tracy was Incident Commander, Tony Lerner was Plans Chief and Bob Spears and Roger Lowe were Division Chiefs.

The closest call on the first day was when Captain Mike Delgatto had to make a stand behind the parking lot overlooking Bailey Canyon. The big oak trees were in the fire's path, but Mike and his crew; Eric Peterson, Pat Ferguson and Rich Synder, made a stand and turned the fire north. This was the beginning of the plan to move the fire to the Northeast and have it avoid the town.

The plan worked, not a single home was lost.

On December 6, 1989 at 11:35 a.m., a fire raced through the attic of a row of stores in Sierra Madre's downtown business district. First-in engine companies found stores fully involved with flames coming out of the front and back of two stores. A second alarm was called and companies from Arcadia, Monrovia and El Monte responded. Because of the age of some of the buildings (circa 1910) and because of the construction, it took a third alarm and over two hours to extinguish the blaze. Six businesses were badly damaged. 38 members of the Department and a total of 91 firefighters worked on this fire, including 10 engines, 3 trucks, 3 rescues, a salvage and a mobile air compressor.

On November 11, 1994, the Department responded to a mutual aid call in Arcadia. On arrival the engine company found a house that was burning from the basement to the attic. Sierra Madre was assigned to vent the roof. Seen here are Rich Snyder, Eric Peterson and Chuck Moore.
